Choosing a venue: the five questions that matter

Capacity is not the number on the brochure. Ask for the seated dinner figure with a dance floor and a band already in the room, and then subtract the space your decor will occupy.

The weather plan is the second question, and it should be answered by walking the alternative rather than reading about it. A covered area that only works for half the guests is not a plan.

Kitchens decide menus. A venue without a working kitchen forces every caterer into reheating, which narrows what can be served and raises what it costs.

Access covers loading, parking and step-free routes. Ask where the trucks unload and how far it is from there to the room, because that distance is billed to you in labour hours.

Sound is last only because it is easiest to fix, but a hall with a hard ceiling and no absorption will make speeches unintelligible past the fourth row.
